Last meeting we had a banner meeting with the theme of the evening being “banner”. In the business section, Khushi presented a club banner to the Berliner Rhetorikmeister ‘s President, Peter Rabeneck.
Our lovely Toastmaster of the Evening, Violetta, wonderfully introduced the speakers by telling us their answer to her prepared question: “Imagine you had a banner and you are free to use it as you like. What would you put on this banner? Where would you display it?”
Prateek delivered Project 7 from the CC manual entitled “The Nimby Banana”. He brought us closer to the topic of wind energy and its problems. Even if wind power is a cheap and great resource, people complain that wind turbines are a hazard for birds. The problem is that people do not want such turbines close to them. Asked the question where to build such turbines people would answer: “Not in my back yard” (NIMBY)- the well-spread concept “Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anyone” (BANANA). The core message of Prateek’s speech was to say YIMBY (“Yes in my backyard”). With the help of his visual help, in this case Powerpoint and its animations, Prateek suceeded in presenting a serious topic in a very funny and entertaining way.
Manjana delivered Project 3 The Demonstration Talk entitled “DNA for Dummies” from the advanced manual, Speaking to Inform. She showed us how to make DNA shaped fashion accessories. She really has an affection for science and crafts.
Lesson learned: Scientists can be funny and entertaining :).
